REPs to conduct CPD audit

When working a busy schedule, juggling commitments and giving your all too each client, it is all too easy to push thoughts of your own professional development to one side. However, it is worth thinking about yourself and your development as a practitioner and an individual. This is where CPD training can help by letting you pursue the areas that interest you in more depth, developing your career in the direction you want it to go.

To enhance the integrity of REPs as the touchstone for professionalism within our industry, a CPD audit will be conducted on 31st October 2014, to ascertain the compliance of REPs members with their CPD requirements.

The process for this audit will be as follows:

  • A proportion of members with over two years’ continuous membership will be randomly selected.
  • These members will have their current CPD compliance checked against the agreed criteria.
  • If the member is lacking in CPD points, they will be given six months to make up the missing points.
  • If the member still has not completed their CPD requirement by the end of this six month period, then they will be considered to be in breach of their membership requirements and suspended from the Register.

Through this auditing process, we are keen to enhance and reinforce the integrity and trust that being a member of REPs entails.

We are aware that many of you will have completed CPD already but may not have logged it onto our system. We advise that you complete this activity before the audit period.

Those selected for audit will be contacted in November.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You can contact REPs Compliance and Standards Manager Rob Wilkie directly using this link.

10 Misconceptions of a Personal Trainer…

Let’s face it – as exercise professionals we are often faced with a bad rep, and it’s not until someone actually experiences the benefits of our work that their view begins to change.

Through Greg Small (Head of Membership and REPs registered trainer) and you, our members, we have listed 10 major misconceptions of a personal trainer.

  1. We all use fake tan. (Most trainers actually just love being outdoors, especially when the weather allows it)
  2. The mirrors in gyms are just for us. (The fact that it allows a client to observe their own technique seems to be an after-thought for most gym goers)
  3. You must be young and gorgeous to be a good personal trainer.
  4. Our clipboards just contain a list of our upcoming social events.
  5. All we consume is protein shakes. We are in fact the biggest advocates of a healthy, balanced diet.

The top five from REPs members

  1. “That we won’t be happy with the session unless you spew your guts up!  The ‘go hard or go home’ attitude works well with some people but definitely not for everyone.” Murray Smith
  2. “That we are also all fully competent running coaches! The number of times I have seen people post on running forums asking for advice and happen to state they are a PT or fitness instructor and then get routinely abused as they should know all the answers!” Darryll Thomas
  3.  “People think just because they are paying you and coming to see you maybe once or twice a week they think they will get results. They only pounds they will lose are sterling. They have to do the homework. Plus we are fitness experts not dieticians.” Carol Snowden
  4.  “That as PTs we know everything about every diet, training technique, nutrition idea, etc. There are so many specialist areas that we can’t possibly know everything.” Shaun Gray
  5.  “The idea that a PT has to be a solid block of muscle. A good personal trainer should obviously be fit and healthy but being muscular does nothing to guarantee the quality of your training sessions/programmes or your client motivation.” Jim Clements

Zumba

The REPs accredited qualification is a first for the industry and combines two existing certificates

Zumba, the largest dance-fitness company in the world that counts 15 million fans in 180 countries, has teamed up with the Exercise, Movement and Dance (EMD) Academy and Lifetime Training to create and launch the new ‘Zumba® Combo Qualification’.

Developed and delivered exclusively by the EMD Academy and Lifetime Training, the new qualification combines the teaching certificate in Exercise, Movement and Dance (EMD) and the instructor certificate in Exercise to Music (ETM).

The Zumba® Combo is available to members of the Zumba® Instructor Network, known as ZIN™ members, who have already completed their Zumba® B1 training.

Those who complete the Zumba® Combo Qualification will also have access to EMDP benefits, which guarantees free REPs membership and insurance, discounted PPL music license fees and ongoing teacher support.

The course takes four days to complete and will be launched in London on 23-26 June. Nine courses are scheduled across the UK in July, with further dates secured nationwide throughout August – October.

REPs Head of Membership Greg Small said: “This qualification is great news for the exercise industry. It is no secret that Zumba has proved hugely popular, and this qualification will only improve the service and elevate delivery to a higher standard.”

Commenting on the introduction of the new qualification, Dave Sibley, Managing Director of Europe for Zumba®, said: “With our ‘exercise in disguise’ method that is practiced in more than 200,000 locations worldwide, Zumba® has shaken up the fitness industry and given thousands of people the opportunity to make a career out of doing something they love. We know our instructors are passionate about continuing their educational journey to improve their skills and knowledge. This course allows them to do so whilst keeping Zumba® centre-stage.”

Nigel Wallace, Client Services Director for Lifetime Training, said: “The qualification is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to advance their instructor career; we have already experienced fantastic interest, and we are confident that, with our reputation for quality and excellence in teaching delivery, learners will benefit hugely from the new qualification.”

Daran Bennett, CEO of The Exercise, Movement & Dance Partnership (EMDP) said: “This is a significant development for the world of EMD and dance-fitness teacher training in the UK. It demonstrates the high professional standards we encourage across the sector. We are delighted that Zumba® continues to embrace ongoing education and qualifications for its ZIN™ members. It will support and guide further excellent teaching to encourage more movers to the party! An aim EMDP are here to guide and champion. It’s been partnership working at its best.”

REPs answers fitness dilemmas with ambassador Louise Hazel #AskLouise

Louise Hazel

Last night (7th May 2014), as many of you have have seen advertised on our Facebook and Twitter pages, was the first of our live twitter chats with our ambassador Louise Hazel.

First of all we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who tweeted in their fitness related questions to #AskLouise! And secondly an extra special thanks goes out to Louise who speedily answered a great range of questions, which were certainly coming in thick and fast we might add!

For those of you who were unaware or missed out on the action we asked our fellow tweeps to tweet in their fitness dilemmas and queries using the hashtag #AskLouise. Questions from last night’s Twitter takeover ranged from ‘what’s the best exercise to do if want to tone my back and sides?’ to ‘How much water should I be drinking a day if I am trying to lose weight as it can be confusing Il, 2l 3l?’

It was great to see so many involved asking for expert advice from a REPs member and we will certainly be running similar events in the future, so make sure you follow us @REPsUK on Twitter.

If there are any areas you’d like us to discuss on Twitter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us (ideally a tweet, of course)

Here’s a sneaky peek of what happened in our twitter takeover in case you missed out…

Each competition requires the competitors to gather information about their client/s, within an agreed time frame and instruct their session to published criteria. The Level 3 Personal Trainer also requires a progressive plan to be written within timed conditions.

The judges will be observing, amongst many things, the ability of the competitor to relate to their client/s, and the quality of the competitor’s instructional and motivational skills. Plus, they will be judged on their ability to work in a pressurised, time sensitive and professional environment whilst maintaining excellent levels of customer care.

From all at REPs, we’d like to wish everyone taking part the very best of luck.
