Funded Training Opportunity for REPs’ Members

REPs’ members, in England, could qualify for match-funded training as part of the Government’s Joint Investment Programme. Supported by SkillsActive, in partnership with the Fitness Industry Association (FIA), the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) and the Sport and Fitness Employers Group (SAFE), specific training courses have been identified to support public health and the delivery of physical activity. The delivery of the training is being co-ordinated by Sussex Downs College, with the courses, being, specially identified as filling existing skills-gaps in the fitness sector. Now employers, and those who are self-employed, are being urged to apply for up to 50 per cent funding of the cost of this training.

SkillsActive’s Sport and Fitness Manager Gary Lee says: “The Joint Investment Programme has £278,000 set aside to meet skills gaps in the fitness industry and we now need employers (and those who are self-employed) to apply access to this training as part of it. “This is a great opportunity for fitness instructors to gain highly-valued qualifications at a heavily discounted price. I know from my work with the fitness industry how motivated and keen to learn fitness professionals are, and I’m sure they won’t let an opportunity like this pass.”

The courses available are:

  • L2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement
  • L3 Award in Adapting Exercise for Older Adults*
  • L3 Award in Adapting Physical Activity for Older Adults*
  • L2 Award in Community Activation
  • L3 Unit – Enabling Individuals to Change Behaviour and Improve Health and Well-being while working as a Health Trainer
  • L2 Unit in Customer Care and Diversity in Active Leisure
  • L3 Award in Adapting Physical Activity for Ante and Post Natal Participants*
  • L3 Award in Adapting Physical Activity for People with Disabilities*
  • L4 Certificate for the management of lower back pain*

Employers, or those who are self-employed, will be expected to provide 50% of the cost of the qualification and the Skills Funding Agency will match this.

Courses marked * will give REPs categories, others gain REPs CPD points.

Please visit our short survey at Survey Monkey JIP to register your interest in the programme. The information you provide will then be submitted to the lead training provider for the project, Sussex Downs College, who will connect you to the delivery network.

  2. Hi Sarah,

I signed up to the match funding but was disappointed to find out that the funding was not matched! In fact I was told that if I booked direct with the company offering Lower Back Pain my course would cost 495.00. However if I booked through the main provider the course was over £800.00 but they were, through this training company offering it for £435.00 and completion I would get just over £100.00 back. Why is there a middle man making money? Surely the point is to find a provider i.e. the provider charging £495.00 and then the client gets the course for £257.50. In my view that is a fair and correct process. I am not interested in money back, If I decide to do the course that is my commitment and the fact that we pay towards the course should be enough of a guarantee to pass the exam. Really disappointed.

I too can’t find the link for Survey Monkey, and would also be interested to hear the response to Beverley’s post above.

  4. Hi all, the link to the survey is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3SX7G67 – or you can click on the link above. Beverley, we’re investigating this for you and will hopefully have some answers soon.

  5. Hi Bev,

Have just had this reply from Gary Lee (SkillsActive Sport and Fitness Manager). We understand your concern over the apparent difference in price you have highlighted. The programme is based on government funding rates for each qualification, and training provision should reflect this. We will be talking to the lead provider about this particular apparent anomaly to ensure that such discrepancies are removed from the programme.

    Hope that helps,

    Sarah

      Sarah,

I too have contacted a provider re the back course to be told that the course is £447.00 and on completion of the course I will be refunded £120.00. I have spoken to the provider as it is advertised again as 50% matched in this months reps magazine. I too am very disappointed.

      • Hi Julie

I’ve passed your query onto Gary Lee, SkillsActive’s Sport and Fitness Manager, and will be posting his reply here shortly.

        Hi Sarah,
Re your message from several weeks ago. I still have not heard from Gary Lee re. the back course and need to get back to Focus Training to book a place. Can you advise please? Julie

  6. Hi, I completed the survey on the day you posted this blog but have yet to hear back. What are the time-scales?

    Thanks.

  7. Gareth

To further what Beverley mentioned earlier, a simple search on the REP’s training provider listing shows that you can actually get your qualifications for cheaper than the supposed matched funding opportunity being offered. This isn’t just an anomaly with the L4 Low Back Pain course, I checked several and they are all the same. Very disappointed to say that someone somewhere in this process is cashing in wholeheartedly.

  8. Fascinating blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?

A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my blog shine.
Please let me know where you got your theme.

  9. I think that what you published made a ton of sense.

But, consider this, what if you added a little content?
I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your blog, but suppose you added a title to maybe get folk’s attention?
I mean Funded Training Opportunity for REPs’ Members | Register of Exercise Professionals UK is a little plain.
You should look at Yahoo’s front page and note how they create post headlines to get viewers interested. You might add a video or a pic or two to get people excited about everything’ve got to say.
In my opinion, it could make your website a little bit more interesting.

But, what about this? suppose you added a little information?
I ain’t saying your content is not good, however suppose you added a post title that makes people want more? I mean Funded Training Opportunity for REPs’ Members | Register of Exercise Professionals UK is kinda vanilla. You could glance at Yahoo’s front page and see how they write article titles to grab people to click.

You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to get readers interested about
everything’ve got to say. In my opinion, it would make your posts a little bit more interesting.

  22. I’m new to developing sites and I was wanting to know if having your blog title relevant to your content really that vital? I notice your title, “Funded Training Opportunity for REPs’ Members | Register of Exercise Professionals UK ” does seem to be spot on with what your blog is about but yet, I prefer to keep my title less content descriptive and based more around site branding. Would you think this is a good idea or bad idea? Any kind of assistance would be greatly appreciated.
